Young learners awarded for hard work and commitment
An apprentice from Hythe came face-to-face with one of UK television’s favourite stars as she learned more about apprenticeships through the ages.
Rebecca Skelton, 18, was a guest at an event celebrating National Apprenticeship Week, where Tony Robinson of Time Team and Blackadder fame was the guest speaker. The teenager, who works as a welding and fabrication apprentice for Palmer Johnson, heard him speak about the history of apprenticeships and how they will play a crucial role in the future.
Tony Robinson said: “I’m really proud to be part of this initiative. Apprenticeships are a great way to learn a craft. It’s not just me who thinks so; the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians had apprentices, so did the Normans, Tudors and Victorians, and today apprenticeship schemes flourish right across the globe. Although they fell into decline after the Second World War, the good news is they’re back again and this time in a 21st century context!”
Rebecca got into her apprenticeship after being a full-time student at Southampton City College. Her training consultant for engineering gave her a talk about apprenticeships and it was something that appealed to her. She completed her college course and got an apprenticeship through Hampshire’s biggest provider, City Training.
She said: “I really like everything about doing an apprenticeship - I get to learn new things every day! The staff at Palmer Johnson and City Training are all so friendly and helpful. I am the only girl on the shop floor at work but I have never felt this has been a problem. I am treated exactly the same as all the other apprentices and always have a good laugh with the lads!
Rebecca has high hopes of moving up the career ladder and is keen to lend a hand to other females in her industry. She said: “I would like to help other apprentices come through the company and be a good role model for other females getting into this occupational area."
Nicola Jones, City Training’s Business Development Officer, accompanied Rebecca to the event and added: “Rebecca is a prime example of a modern-day apprentice. She is hungry to learn, dedicated and so loyal to her employer that she wants to climb the ranks and help others within the company. She is a credit to City Training and to Palmer Johnson.”
