Job Search Tips

Finding a Job - Advice and Tips

Your Training Consultant will work hard to try and find employment opportunities, but you will also need to do some work.  In order to assist your Training Consultant you need to compile an up-to-date CV, details on how to do this are overleaf.

§  Family and Friends. Talk to them about employment opportunities; do they have any contacts or connections; maybe someone in a relevant trade has done some work for them recently?

§  Contact Employers. Use the Yellow Pages or search engines on the internet to find details of local employers in your chosen occupational area.  You can then send them a CV, or better still, phone them or go and speak with them face to face.

§  Newspapers.  Look in the local newspapers for job vacancies. The Daily Echo has a job supplement every Thursday and Saturday.  Check this every week; if you see something that looks interesting then follow the instructions regarding applying.

§  Job Centre.  Visit your local job centre or go online at www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk to search for vacancies.  Although you may not find any opportunities for apprentices, you may get some leads from employers looking for people in your occupational area.

§  Connexions.  Your local Connexions Office may also have details of vacancies in the occupational area that you wish to work in. Your nearest office can be found on the Connexions website at www.connexions-southcentral.org.uk

§  Employment Access Centre.  They offer advice and support in helping young people look for employment opportunities. You can also use their facilities such as photocopier, internet access and telephone free of charge.  They are located on Bernard Street on Southampton

§  Work Experience.  If you have no experience in your chosen occupation you may find it difficult to get a job in that area.  A good starting point maybe to contact potential employers to see if you could do some voluntary work experience.  Offering your services for free shows your keen and may lead to the opportunity of employment.  Any experience you gain will also be good to put on your CV

Ensure you follow up any employment opportunities.  Your Placement Officer will be happy to speak to any employers to explain how the apprenticeship works.

Remember, you cannot start an apprenticeship unless you have a suitable full-time job.
