Mechanical Engineering

(Fri, 27 Nov 2009)

Stacey Woolvin

What have you done since school?
I went to Southdown College for 2 years and studied A-Levels in Theatre Studies, English Literature & Language, RE and Art. I started a full time job on completion of my college course.

I decided to look for another job and came across the Apprenticeship Scheme with BVT based in Portsmouth.  I attended an assessment and interview and was successful in being offered an apprenticeship with BVT in Mechanical Engineering.

What made you choose this career?
I wanted to do a job where I could see results in the work that I have carried out. Engineering is a great career and enables you to see what you have achieved each day! I also thought it would be useful in helping me sort out problems with my own car!

What does your job involve?
My job varies from day to day and now that I have completed my Apprenticeship I am taking on more responsibilities and tasks.  Generally, I am either doing refurbishments or am involved in setting up new systems.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I like my job because there is variety and I am always active. The people I work with are very supportive which makes going to work very enjoyable.

Where would you like to be in 3 - 5 years time?
I am planning to stay at BVT and hope to commence an HNC at Fareham College at some point in the future.

What would you say to encourage other people into doing an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are a good way of gaining qualifications whilst earning money. Unlike university you do not get into debt because of studying. I also think it is a great way to gain experience and skills and be offered full-time employment on completion of the Apprenticeship programme.

What would you say to encourage other people into your occupational area?
There are few women in the Mechanical Engineering field, although my Team Leader is female and was the first female apprentice in Mechanical Engineering at BVT! This occupation is great, if you enjoy tinkering and fixing things. The job also involves problem solving and using your initiative.

How do you find the combination of work and studying?
I always liked the set up at BVT as you get to spend 1 day at college and then a morning in the apprentice training rooms at BVT to complete college work. This type of studying eases you into the working life and breaks up the week.

Anything else?
I am glad I went to college and worked before I did the apprenticeship as I feel it gave better preparation for the course.
