Electrical Installation

(Fri, 27 Nov 2009)

Phillipa Kewley

What have you done since school?
As soon as I left school I started looking for an apprenticeship.  However, finding an apprenticeship was not as easy as I had imagined so I opted to go to City College in Southampton and studied PEO (Performing Engineering Operations) at level 2 and City & Guilds 2330 qualification in Electrical Installation. On completion of my full-time course, I applied for Southampton City Council’s Apprenticeship Programme. I was interviewed and became a successful applicant!

Do you have any role models?
My Dad is an Electrician and I enjoy watching and getting involved in electrical tasks that he does around the house.  I have always wanted to become an Electrician.

I didn’t particularly enjoy school so I was keen to get out into the workplace. I knew a career in Electrical Installation would give me the opportunity to do this!

What does your job involve?
My job involves working in empty properties and undertaking lots of different electrical tasks in preparation for the next tenants to move in. The tasks involve installing electrical sockets, switches, extractor fans and storage heaters.

What do you like about your job?
The job is very hands on and interesting. The people I work with are really friendly and supportive and there is a good atmosphere.

Where would you like to be in 3-5 years time?
I hope to be taken on by Southampton City Council on completion of my apprenticeship. I am working towards being qualified to NVQ Level 3 and to increase my knowledge in the electrical industry. As I gain more experience I am keen on taking on additional responsibilities.  I have considered being a mentor for other apprentices who work for Southampton City Council.

What would you say to encourage other people into doing an Apprenticeship?
Its great to be in a job where you get trained and paid!  The apprenticeship programme suited me as I was really keen to go out into the workplace and learn on the job.

What would you say to encourage other people into your occupational area?
A trade is always going to be useful and you will have the qualification and skills for the rest of your life. The Electrical Installation course can be quite demanding and there is a lot to take in, but if you really want to become an electrician, it really is worth all the effort!

How do you find the combination of work and studying?
I go to Eastleigh College on day-release to work towards my NVQ qualification. I enjoy the combination of work and learning and find that my colleagues are always very supportive, especially if I have any queries.
