Wood Occupations

(Fri, 27 Nov 2009)

Dan Doyle

What have you done since school?
On leaving school I wanted to do an apprenticeship, but was not able to find a suitable job.  I did some part time work at a garage, as I had a personal interest in cars. I attended a Career’s fair and saw the leaflet about apprenticeships with Southampton City Council. I applied for the scheme and was fortunate enough to be a successful applicant.

What made you choose this career?
I didn’t particularly enjoy school, so was reluctant to go to College full-time. I was keen to get a trade so I applied for different apprenticeships within Southampton City Council.  Unfortunately, I was unable to gain an apprenticeship within the Electrical Installation trade due to the fact that I am colour blind. Carpentry seemed the best option for me to focus on, especially as I enjoyed woodwork at school.

What does your job involve?
I do a variety of tasks including: removing kitchens, fitting new kitchens, hanging doors, tiling, latexing floors and repairing stairs. I like the fact that I am not just gaining Carpentry skills but get involved with other tasks as well.

What do you like about your job?
I like the fact that I get to work in a different place every day. The people I work with are really nice, especially my Supervisor who takes me out on jobs and gives me lots of support and encouragement. The hours are great, with an early start and early finish. I get a real sense of pride in my work when I have completed a job!

Where would you like to be in 3 - 5 years time?
I hope that Southampton City Council keep me on when I finish my apprenticeship as I am very keen to continue working with this organisation. I would also like to attend some evening classes so that I can increase my knowledge and skills in the trade and be able to take on more responsibilities.

What would you say to encourage other people into doing an Apprenticeship?
In my experience, I believe that the combination of working and learning has been great and far better than attending a full-time college course. I will be able to use my qualifications for the rest of my life and have relevant work experience to go with them. It’s also been enjoyable to meet new people both at work and on my college course.

How do you find the combination of work and studying?
I do block release for my carpentry training and think the studying aspect fits in well around my working life. The Council are really supportive and encourage staff to participate in learning and achieving qualifications.

I really enjoy the apprenticeship programme and I would recommend others to do it!
