What have you done since school?
I went to Fareham College for 2 years to study the NVQ level 2 in Engineering. When I got to the end of the 2 years I saw the advert for the FSL Apprenticeship scheme in the paper and applied for it as I had enjoyed the Engineering course at College so much! I was really pleased when I was accepted to start the Fabrication & Welding Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme with them.
What made you choose this career?
I enjoyed the Technology subjects at school and decided to continue with a subject at college that I had enjoyed. This led me to do Fabrication & Welding. I found the Engineering course interesting and enjoyed it and decided that a career within this would be right for me!
What does your job involve?
I am based in the workshop where we make stands. A lot of my day is spent observing and making notes about the work that is being carried out. With supervision I also do some practical work which I really enjoy.
What do you like about your job?
I like my job because it is really varied. I do lots of different tasks in the workshop and there are really good people to work with and a great working environment. I also find the working hour’s suit me well too.
Where would you like to be in 3-5 years time?
Once I have finished my Apprenticeship, I would like to progress onto testing the welds, rather than just using them. There is more training I can do with FSL, so I am keen to stay with the company and keep training to become more qualified.
What would you say to encourage other people into doing an Apprenticeship?
I find that you mix with like-minded people which make it really enjoyable. I like the fact that I get trained and paid and meet new people in the work place and at College.
How do you find the combination of work and studying?
I think that the studying and working is set up in such a way at FSL that is simple to complete and enjoyable. You are not constantly working or studying, there is a good mix of the two.
