What are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are work-based learning programmes designed by Employers for Employers. Since 1994 over 1 million people, nationally, have trained through an Apprenticeship programme. Anyone 16 to 24 could be eligible for LSC funding for an Apprenticeship whether they are a new recruit or an existing employee.

What qualifications do Apprentices gain?

There are two levels of Apprenticeship:

  • Apprenticeships – lead to an NVQ Level 2, Key Skills and in most cases a Technical Certificate and usually take 12 – 18 months to complete

  • Advanced Apprenticeships – lead to an NVQ Level 3, Key Skills and in most cases a Technical Certificate and usually take 2 – 3 years to complete

Employers Commitment:

  • Allow Apprentice time away from work for training usually in the form of day-release or in some cases block release
  • Provide a Contract of Employment
  • Ensure Apprentices are treated equally irrespective of race, ethnic origin, religion, sexuality, gender or disability
  • The LSC contributes towards the cost of training the Apprentice. However, you may be required to make a contribution towards the cost through a management fee

City Training’s commitment to Employers:

  • Advertise your vacancy free of charge on AVMS (Apprenticeship Vacancy Matching Service)
  • Interview and assess people (new recruits and/or existing employees) and match to your vacancy
  • Arrange day-release, or in some cases block release training to support the learning that is taking place in the workplace
  • Monitor the progress of the Apprentice through regular reviews and provide additional help and support where needed
