Auto Electrical

The Auto Electrical Apprenticeship is delivered over a 2 year period. You will attend college one day a week.

As an Auto Electrical Apprentice you will fit and repair a wide variety of electrical and electronic systems and accessories in motor vehicles.

Your main tasks will include:

·         Taking readings, using a laptop or hand-held device connected to an engine’s electronic control unit (found in newer vehicles)

·         Checking and testing wiring and parts in older vehicles using portable instruments

·         Using the readings to find faults

·         Researching faults using manufacturers’ circuit diagrams and specification manuals

·         Repairing or replacing faulty parts

·         Re-testing the system to make sure everything is working correctly and safely

You will normally work up to 40 hours per week. If your company operates a 24 hour breakdown service. You may have to work shifts.

You will need good practical skills for using a range of tools and electronic systems. The ability to work methodically, have good problem solving skills and be able to pay close attention to detail is also very important. You will need to be able to work as part of a team and on your own, and have good communication and customer service skills.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME
NVQ Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance & Repair – For learners new to this profession

Mandatory Units (all to be taken):

·         Contribute to workplace good housekeeping

·         Ensure your own actions reduce risks to Health & Safety

·         Maintain positive working relationships

·         Locate and correct simple electrical faults

Optional Units:

·         Remove and fit basic mechanical, electrical and trim (MET) components to vehicles

·         Conduct pre and post work vehicle inspections

·         Enhance vehicle electrical features

·         Repair electrical units

Technical Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair:

·         Diagnose and rectify engine electrical faults

·         Diagnose and rectify transmission and chassis electrical faults

Optional Units:

·         Diagnose and rectify auxiliary equipment electrical faults

·         Diagnose and rectify motorcycle auxiliary equipment electrical faults

Technical Certificate in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair:
