The Bricklaying Apprenticeship is delivered over a 2 year period. You will attend college on block release (1 full week every 3-4 weeks).
Bricklayers build and repair walls, chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative stonework like archways. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects.
You will spend most of your time outside in all types of weather conditions, and the work will be physically demanding. You could work at heights on scaffolding, and you will be expected to use protective equipment, such as safety boots, gloves, goggles and helmets.
You will need good practical skills and the ability to work methodically and accurately. You will usually work as part of a team and will need to be aware of safety issues associated with the work environment.
As a bricklayer your work will include:
· Measuring the work area and setting out the first rows and damp courses
· Mixing mortar by hand or with a mechanical mixer
· Laying the bricks on top of each other and applying the mortar with a trowel
· Shaping and trimming bricks using hammers, chisels and power tools
Job Roles: Bricklayer. After training you could specialise in stone masonry
