The Child Care Apprenticeship is delivered over approximately a 15 month period. You will attend college half to one day a week.
The aim of the Apprenticeship is to give a rounded education and training to people wishing to embark on a career in child care.
If you are a person with a warm, creative and patient nature and enjoy working with young children then a career in child care could be well suited to you. You will also need good communication skills, a sense of responsibility and a balanced and fair approach. When applying to employers to find a suitable position for you apprenticeship, you should consider the following types of organisations:
· Day nurseries
· Pre-schools
· Schools
As an apprentice in child care you will need to be caring and willing to take part in creative play activities like painting and other creative arts. You may also be undertaking tasks relating to children’s personal care like feeding and nappy changing. If you are working in a school this may entail 1:1 support with children in the classroom supporting the teacher.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME
NVQ Level 2 – For learners new to this profession
Mandatory Units (all to be taken):
· Contribute to positive relationships
· Help to keep children safe
· Support children’s development
· Use support to develop own practise in children’s care, learning and development
· Prepare and maintain environments to meet children’s needs
· Support children’s play and learning
1 Optional Unit must then be taken out of:
· Contribute to the effectiveness of teams
· Support the development of babies and children under 3 years
· Support a child with disabilities or special educational needs
· Support children and young people’s play
Extras:
· Introduction to Work in Children’s Social Care (to be completed within 6 months of start of programme)
· Technical Certificate in Children’s Care Learning & Development (EDI)
· Paediatric First Aid Qualification
· Level 1 Key Skill in Communication
· Level 1 Key Skill in Application of Number
ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP
NVQ Level 3 – For learners who are working as or aspiring to be a supervisor
Mandatory Units (all to be taken):
· Develop and promote positive relationships
· Develop and maintain a healthy, safe and secure environment for children
· Promote children’s development
· Reflect on and develop practise
· Protect and promote children’s rights
4 Optional Units must then be taken out of:

· Plan and organise environments for children and families |

· Promote the health and physical development of children |
|
· Promote children’s well-being and resilience |
|
· Plan and implement curriculum frameworks for early education |
|
· Assess children’s progress according to curriculum frameworks for early education |

· Plan and implement positive environments for babies and children under 3 years |

· Support early intervention for the benefit of children and families |
|
· Provide physical care that promotes the health and development of babies and children under 3 years |
|
· Support children with disabilities or special educational needs and their families |
|
· Safeguard children from harm |
|
· Administer provision within the childcare setting |

· Support children and families through home visiting |
|
· Create environments that promote positive behaviour |
|
· Develop productive working relationships with colleagues |

· Co-ordinate special educational needs in early education settings |
