The Civil Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship is delivered over a 2 and a half year period. You will attend college one day a week.

As a Civil Engineering Advanced Apprentice you will be involved in planning, designing and managing all types of construction projects, from bridge repairs to the building of new sports stadiums. You will work in one of the following areas:

·         Structural: Dams, buildings, offshore platforms and pipelines

·         Transportation: Roads, railways, canals and airports

·         Environmental: Water supply networks, drainage and flood barriers

·         Maritime: Ports, harbours and sea defences

·         Geotechnical: Mining, earthworks and construction foundations

Your typical duties will include:

·         Drawing up blue prints, using Computer Aided Design (CAD)

·         Assessing the environmental impact and risks connected to projects

·         Discussing requirements with the client and colleagues

·         Analysing survey, mapping and materials-testing data with computer modelling software

You will need excellent Maths, Science and IT skills. You will need the ability to explain design ideas and plans clearly. The ability to work within budgets and to deadlines, along with good team working skills are also very important.

ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP
NVQ Level 3 in Built Environment Design

Mandatory Units (both to be taken):

·         Produce and recommend detailed design solutions

·         Maintain professional relationships and practise

4 Optional Units must then be taken out of a choice of:

·         Investigate factors affecting project development

·         Plan, carry out and present measured surveys

·         Carry out and present condition surveys

·         Carry out tests and present reports

·         Report on and prepare applications to secure consents

·         Prepare drawings and schedules

·         Collate project information and prepare specifications

·         Obtain and assess tenders

·         Prepare tenders

·         Monitor projects

BTEC National Certificate in Civil Engineering:

·         Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction and the Built Environment

·         Construction and the Environment

·         Science and Materials in Construction and the Built Environment

·         Construction Technology and Design in Construction and Civil Engineering

·         Mathematics in Construction and the Built Environment

·         Planning, Organisation and Control of Resources in Construction and the Built Environment

·         Graphical Detailing in Construction and the Built Environment

·         Measuring, Estimating and Tendering Processes in Construction and the Built   Environment

·         Surveying in Construction and Civil Engineering

Extras:

·         Induction Workbook (Must be completed within first 6 months of the programme)

·         Level 2 Key Skill in Communication

·         Level 2 Key Skill in Application of Number
