Apprenticeships in Fabrication and Welding can take between one and three years to complete.
Welders cut, shape and join sections of metal in a wide range of industries. It can involve working in factories or construction sites, assembling and erecting steel structures or working within the marine industry.
Main tasks will include:
· Select and lay out materials to be cut or joined
· Follow engineering instructions and drawings
· Use the most suitable welding method for the job in hand
· Inspect and test cuts and joins, using precision measuring instruments
As well as working with metals and alloys, you may also cut and join composite materials, such as plastics. You will need to wear protective clothing such as a face shield, apron or gloves.
You will need to have good hand-to-eye coordination, the ability to work accurately and have good concentration levels. The ability to understand technical plans and drawings whilst also having good numeracy skills are also important.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME
NVQ Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations
Mandatory Units
· Working safely in an engineering environment
· Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
· Using and communicating technical information
· Producing sheet metal components and assemblies
· Producing plate work components and assemblies
1 Optional unit must then be taken out of a choice of the following:
· Preparing and using manual metal arc welding equipment
· Preparing and using manual TIG or Plasma-arc welding equipment
· Preparing and using manual MIG, MAG and other continuous wire welding equipment

· Level 1 Key Skill in Application of Number
ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP
NVQ Level 3 Fabrication and Welding Engineering
You will complete these mandatory units plus other units relating to your particular industry
· Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
· Using and interpreting engineering drawings and documents
· Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
City & Guilds 2800 Certificate in Engineering
Mandatory Units
· Working effectively and safely in the engineering environment
· Engineering practises and principles
· Principles of fabrication
· Pattern Development
Plus two optional units must then be taken which will involve specialising in one or two fabrication and welding techniques
