The Hairdressing Apprenticeship is delivered over a two year period. You will attend college one day a week.

Hairdressers cut, colour and shape clients’ hair to create the style they request. As a trainee hairdresser you will usually begin by carrying out basic tasks such as:

·         Greeting customers

·         Shampooing hair

·         Making sure towels and supplies are ready for use

·         Keeping the salon clean and tidy

As a qualified hairdresser your work will include:

·         Hair consultation

·         Cutting and styling

·         Colouring, perming and straightening

·         Making appointments and taking payments

·         Ordering materials

You could work as a hairdresser in a salon, you could also find opportunities in other places, such as hotels, hospitals, care homes, cruise lines and armed forces bases.

To be a hairdresser, you need to have a unique combination of skills and personality. You will need a creative flair, good practical skills, customer service and ‘people skills’ and willingness to learn new techniques and methods.

Job roles: Hairdresser, Specialist in Afro-Caribbean hair, Barber, teacher.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME
NVQ Level 2 – For learners new to this profession

Mandatory Units (all to be taken)

·         Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety

·         Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation

·         Advise and consult with clients

·         Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp

·         Change hair colour

·         Style and finish hair

·         Set and dress hair

·         Cut hair using basic techniques

You must then take 2 Optional Units:

·         Fulfill salon reception duties

·         Promote additional products or services to clients

·         Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work

·         Style hair using basic plaiting techniques and added hair

·         Perm and neutralise hair using basic techniques

·         Perm, relax and neutralise hair

·         Perm, relax and neutralise African Caribbean hair

·         Provide scalp massage services

Extras

·         Induction workbook (to be completed within 6 months of starting the programme)

·         Level 1 Key Skill in Communication

·         Level 1 Key Skill in Application of Number

ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP
NVQ Level 3- For learners who are working as or aspiring to be a supervisor

Mandatory Units

·         Monitor procedures to safely control work operations

·         Promote additional services or products to clients

·         Provide hairdressing consultation services

·         Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques

You must then take 5 optional units:

·         Colour hair using a variety of techniques

·         Provide colour correction services

·         Creatively style and dress hair

·         Creatively dress long hair

·         Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills

·         Create a variety of permed effects

·         Provide creative hair extension services

·         Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business

·         Support client service improvements

·         Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities
