The Health & Social Care Apprenticeship is delivered over approximately a 15 month period. You will attend college seven times over the programme. All other training will be delivered on a one-to-one basis in the workplace.

As a Health and Social Care Apprentice you will provide practical help with daily activities to people with a range of needs. You could work with people with physical or learning disabilities, people with drug or alcohol misuse issues, the elderly, or people with mental health conditions.

You could work with clients in their own homes, in sheltered housing, day centres, or in residential settings such as nursing homes. Your duties will vary depending on the type of person you are working with but could include:

·         Supporting clients with daily personal care such as washing, dressing, using the toilet and feeding themselves

·         Helping clients organise their budget, pay bills and write letters

·         Getting to know individual clients and being aware of their special interests and social needs

As an Apprentice in Health and Social Care you will need a friendly and caring approach with tact and sensitivity to your clients needs. You will need a desire to help people and have patience and a sense of humour.

Please note that 16 and 17 year olds can undertake an Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care (only elderly care) but will have to be suitably supervised whilst delivering the personal care to clients and the client will have to agree to them delivering their care.

NVQ Level 2 – For learners new to this profession

Mandatory Units (all to be taken)

·         Communicate with and complete records for individuals

·         Support the health and safety of yourself and individuals

·         Develop your own knowledge and practise

·         Ensure your own actions support the care, protection and well being of individuals

2 Optional Units must then be selected:

·         Carry out and provide feedback on specific plan of care activities

·         Support individuals in their daily living

·         Support individuals to make journeys

·         Support individuals to meet their domestic and personal needs

·         Support individuals to access and participate in recreational activities

·         Support individuals to take part in development activities

·         Support individuals during therapy sessions

·         Provide food and drink for individuals

·         Help individuals to eat and drink

·         Help individuals to keep mobile

·         Help address the physical comfort needs of individuals

·         Undertake agreed pressure area care

·         Support individuals with their personal care needs

·         Support individuals to manage continence

·         Maintain the feet of individuals who have been assessed as requiring help with general foot care

·         Assist the administration of medication

·         Support individuals prior to, during or after clinical procedures

·         Contribute to moving and handling of individuals

·         Observe, monitor and record the conditions of individuals

·         Support individuals to undertake and monitor their own health care

·         Support individuals who are distressed

·         Contribute to working in collaboration with carers in the caring role

·         Contribute to effective group care

·         Gain access to and ensure individuals homes are secure

·         Manage environments and resources during clinical activities

·         Provide first aid to an individual needing emergency assistance

·         Protect yourself from the risk of violence at work

ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP
NVQ Level 3 – For learners who are working as or aspiring to be a supervisor

Mandatory Units (all to be taken)

·         Promote effective communication for and about individuals

·         Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security in the working environment

·         Reflect on and develop your practise

·         Promote choice, well being and the protection of all individuals

·         Support individuals to develop and maintain social networks and relationships
