The Heavy Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship is delivered a two year period. You will attend college one day a week.
As a Heavy Motor Vehicle Apprentice you will service and repair lorries, coaches, buses and you could even repair fire engines. You will work on all areas of vehicle mechanics and electrics, from the engine and exhaust systems to the air conditioning and security features.
Your typical duties will include:
· Finding and identifying faults
· Advising customers if repairs are needed and how critical they are
· Providing time and cost estimates for jobs
· Carrying out repairs and replacing damaged parts
· Fitting and servicing accessories like radios and alarms
· Carrying out routine servicing and checks
You will work up to 40 hours a week, usually on a shift system as many heavy vehicle garages work through the night.
You will need to have excellent knowledge of motor vehicle technology and have good problem-solving skills to find faults. The ability to work quickly and to pay attention to detail will be very important when customers’ have deadlines.

NVQ Level 2 – For learners new to this profession
Mandatory Units
· Contribute to workplace good housekeeping
· Ensure your own actions reduce risks to Health and Safety
· Maintain positive working relationship
· Carry out routine vehicle maintenance
· Remove and replace engine units and components
· Remove and replace auxiliary electrical units and components
You will then need to choose 2 Optional Units
· Conduct pre and post work vehicle inspections
· Valet vehicles
· Remove and replace commercial vehicle transmission and driveline units and components
· Remove and replace commercial vehicle chassis units and components

ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME
NVQ Level 3 – For learners who are working as or aspiring to be a supervisor
Mandatory Units (all to be taken)
· Contribute to workplace good housekeeping
· Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
· Maintain positive working relationships
· Diagnose and rectify vehicle engine and component faults
3 Optional Units must then be chosen
· Inspect Vehicles
· Identify and agree customer vehicle needs
· Overhaul mechanical units
· Diagnose and rectify vehicle transmission and driveline system faults
· Diagnose and rectify auxiliary equipment electrical faults
· Diagnose and rectify commercial vehicle chassis system faults
