Marine Industry Apprenticeships are delivered over a 2 to 3 year period, depending on which level you aspire to.

As a Yacht & Boat Builder/Marine Engineer you will work for one of the following types of companies: ship builder, ship repairer, conversion company, boat builder or a repair and maintenance firm. The work of these companies could range from building hulls on sea-going vessels, to restoring the fixtures and fittings on traditional narrow boats.

You will use carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding and painting skills or become a marine engineer servicing and repairing boat engines.

Your tasks will typically include:

·         Making out construction materials using engineering templates

·         Welding, cutting and shaping parts or sections

·         Assembling boat sections and pipe work

·         Installing engines

·         ‘Fitting out’ the vessel with furnishings, navigation and communications equipment, heating and lighting

You will usually work 37-40 hours a week but urgent repair work may mean you have to work weekends or shifts, including nights. This should also include your day release at college.

You will need the ability to understand technical plans and drawings, and it is very important that you can work as part of a team. The ability to solve problems and having good maths and IT skills is also important.
