Painting and Decorating

The Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship is delivered over a 2 year period. You will attend college on block release (1 week every 3-4 weeks).

Painters and Decorators work on projects ranging from re-decorating homes, to applying heavy duty finishes to large structures, like bridges.

On domestic jobs, you will use paint, varnishes and wallpaper to decorate rooms. You will follow the householder’s instructions about choice of colour, finishing texture and wallpaper to decorate rooms.

Main tasks will include:

· Measuring surface areas to work out how much paint or wall covering you need

· Stripping off old wallpaper

· Filling holes and cracks and levelling surfaces

· Preparing surfaces with primer and undercoat

· Mixing paint to the right shade

· Applying layers of paint and hanging wall paper

You will need good practical skills and have a flair for creativity. You will need to work carefully and pay attention to detail. A good head for heights and sense of balance are important. You will need to be able to work alone or as part of a team.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME
NVQ Level 2 – For learners new to this profession

Mandatory Units (all to be taken)

· Conform to general workplace safety

· Conform to efficient working practises

· Move and handle resources

· Erect and dismantle access/working platforms

· Prepare surfaces for the application of decorative/protective finishes

· Apply paint systems by brush or roller

· Induction workbook (to be completed within 6 months of starting the programme)

· Technical Certificate

· Level 1 Key Skill in Communication
